Origin & Formation

Formed over 90–100 million years ago, these opals date back to the age of the dinosaurs, when inland seas covered much of Australia. Silica-rich water slowly seeped into cracks and cavities within the earth, eventually solidifying into opal. Over millions of years, this process created the vibrant internal structure responsible for the opal’s famous play-of-colour.

How It’s Mined

Lightning Ridge black opals are mined deep underground in narrow seams using a combination of traditional and modern techniques. Miners carefully excavate horizontal tunnels, often following thin “opal levels” through sandstone and claystone. Every piece is extracted by hand with precision—making each stone not only rare, but a product of skilled craftsmanship and dedication.

What Makes It So Rare

Black opal is considered the rarest and most valuable type of opal in the world due to its naturally dark body tone. This dark base enhances the intensity and contrast of the colours, allowing vibrant flashes of red, green, blue, and purple to stand out with exceptional brilliance.

Unlike other opals, which are more common and often lighter in tone, true black opal is found almost exclusively in Lightning Ridge, making supply extremely limited.

Why Choose Lightning Ridge Black Opal

  • Unrivalled Colour Play – Bright, electric flashes that shift with light and movement
  • Extreme Rarity – Found in only one region globally
  • Natural History – A gemstone formed during the age of dinosaurs
